Waste Management on Örö

Every piece of waste travels a long journey

Facts about waste management

On Örö, all waste is sorted and transported to the mainland for processing. Waste management is based on logistics in demanding archipelago conditions. You can help by reducing the amount of waste generated and by taking your own rubbish with you.

In the outer archipelago, weather conditions, ferry connections, seasonal peak loads, and storage capacity all affect how smoothly waste management operates. Every additional amount of waste increases transport needs and the overall burden on waste management.

All waste is transported from the island to the mainland by boat. Each bag of waste requires space, handling, and transport. Waste transport is part of the island's carbon footprint.

How you can make a difference

  • Sort waste according to instructions
  • Reduce the use of single-use products
  • Recycle and use reusable alternatives whenever possible
  • Pack only what you need
  • Take your own waste off the island if possible
  • Leave as little waste as possible during your visit
  • Never leave batteries or other hazardous waste in the outer archipelago
  • Remember that all waste is transported to the mainland for processing
  • Every kilogram of waste reduced decreases transport needs and environmental load
  • Small choices reduce the overall environmental impact of waste management on the island

How waste management works on Örö

Waste is generated daily in all island operations:

  • accommodation
  • restaurants and kitchens
  • maintenance and cleaning work
  • guest harbour and services
  • construction and maintenance activities

All waste is sorted and transported regularly to the mainland for processing.

The load on waste management varies significantly by season, and during peak season waste volumes can multiply compared to quieter periods. The less waste left on the island, the fewer transports are needed both within the island and in transport to the mainland.

Please note that the outer archipelago is not suitable for recycling hazardous waste, such as batteries and accumulators. Therefore, always take these types of waste with you back to the mainland.
