On the Archipelago's Terms

Responsible travel in the outer archipelago is built on small actions that make a big difference

Life in the archipelago is different

Örö is located in the heart of the outer archipelago, where water, energy, and waste management cannot be taken for granted. All essential resources must be produced, transported, and managed under island conditions. Storms, strong winds, equipment failures, or the heavy demand of the summer season can all affect the island's operations and resilience.

That is why every choice made here has a real and tangible impact.

How Sustainability Comes to Life on Örö

Every litre of water is pumped, treated, and stored on the island.

The system operates on the archipelago's terms. Energy goes further when it is used wisely.

All waste is transported by ferry to the mainland for processing.

Small Actions Make a Big Difference

On Örö, sustainability is not an abstract concept but a part of everyday life. The way we use water and electricity, and the amount of waste we generate, all have a direct impact on the island's ability to function.

  • Water is a precious resource. A 10 minute shower can use around 100 litres of water. Every additional litre has to be produced on the island.
  • If you brought it with you, consider taking it back to the mainland. All waste generated on Örö must be transported off the island by the same route used by visitors.
  • The electricity system operates within the island's limits. Thoughtful energy use helps support Örö's self sufficiency.

Every Action Contributes to a More Sustainable Örö

On Örö, sustainability means making practical everyday choices that make life and visits in the outer archipelago possible. Thank you for respecting the unique conditions of this island environment.

Örö's operations are guided by a range of sustainability, quality, and environmental certifications, plans, and practices. Together, they support continuous improvement and help ensure that the island continues to meet high environmental and operational standards.
